There’s an old saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words.”

The origins of the phrase go back to 1911. However, some point to this advertisement created by Henrik Ibsen in 1913, which explained that ‘one look at our line of Republic, Firestone, Miller, and United States tires can tell you more than a hundred personal letters or advertisements.’

It’s clear pictures, and before that, paintings and sculptures evoke narratives that would take an endless number of words to attempt to convey. The magic of pictures is an instant emotional reaction.  Sometimes good, sometimes not.

I bring this up because the picture below was not only worth a thousand words but also more than one trillion dollars in market capitalization in the stock market. A few words and poor body language from Jay Powell exacerbated the selloff. It all boils down to “higher for longer” being more of a reality than anyone thought it would be.
